Taxis are part of the day-to-day transportation around New York City. The yellow-colored vehicle can be seen picking up and dropping off passengers around the clock. Despite their ubiquity, however, the vehicles are not exempt from traffic rules and regulations enforced to keep everyone safe from vehicle accidents. When taxis ignore those rules, bad things can happen.
Take, for instance, a tragic car accident involving a taxi occurred recently in New York City. According to the report, a taxi traveling in Midtown Manhattan hit several people, resulting in injuries to the victims. Authorities confirmed that two people suffered injuries in the crash. One of the victims was taken to Bellevue Hospital and is listed in critical condition.
Several witnesses spoke out regarding the car accident. A bicyclist stated that the 24-year-old cab driver struck multiple people at a high speed. Some pedestrians asserted that the taxi drove into the crosswalk while they were crossing the street. Unfortunately, according to reports, one victim lost part of her leg in the crash.
The car accident remains under investigation. Speeding and road rage are suspected factors in the crash.
Operating a motor vehicle in a reckless or aggressive way can be dangerous. In a study conducted by the American Automobile Association, aggressive driving in the United States resulted in an average of 1,500 injuries and fatalities per year. Road rage or aggressive driving may cause accidents as well.
In the event of a car accident, aggressive or reckless driving may be considered driver's negligence. The same goes for speeding. In instances like this, a driver who operates unsafely on the road may be legally responsible for the damages caused by the car accident.
If that is the case, car accident victims in New York may wish to speak with a legal professional to pursue compensation for the damages. Through a personal injury claim, the victim's medical expenses, lost wages and emotional distress may be compensated.
